MUSICALS THAT ARE MEANT TO STAY FOREVER

Owing to the success of La La Land, that hit all the right notes with Academy voters this year. The joyous musical, about two struggling artists in Los Angeles, earned a historic 14 Oscar nominations, tying it with previous 14-time nominated films All about Eve and Titanic. Could La La Land match its historic number of nominations with a historic number of wins? That depends.
Before that, we have got you some of the classic musicals that are filled
with infectious melodies and memorable performances to binge watch over the weekend.

1) Meet Me in St. Louis (1944)

In the year leading up to the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, the four Smith daughters learn lessons of life and love, even as they prepare for a reluctant move to New York. The film also got us the best classic Christmas song, ‘Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas’.”

2) Singin’ in the Rain (1952)

Of course it's about romance, as most musicals are, but it's also about the film industry in a period of dangerous transition. The movie simplifies the changeover from silents to talkies, but doesn't falsify it. "Singin' in the Rain” pulses with life; in a movie about making movies.

3) Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954)

In 1850 Oregon, when a backwoodsman brings a wife home to his farm, his six brothers decide that they want to get married too Pure classic, hilarious, innocent fun with a clever storyline and catchy musical score. By the way, the dancing is good, too.

4)  My Fair Lady (1964)

The film, which won Best Picture at the 37th Academy Awards. A misogynistic and snobbish phonetics professor agrees to a wager that he can take a flower girl and make her presentable in high society. Watch it for the charm of Audrey Hepburn.

5)  The Sound of Music (1965)

While talking about musicals we cannot forget this classic. Set in Austria on the eve of the Anschluss in 1938, the musical tells the story of Maria, who takes a job as governess to a large family while she decides whether to become a nun. She falls in love with the children, and eventually their widowed father, Captain von Trapp. He is ordered to accept a commission in the German navy, but he opposes the Nazis. He and Maria decide on a plan to flee Austria with the children.

6) Cabaret (1972)

It’s not for people who just want to see a happy-clappy no-troubles-here musical. It can said to be one of the most psychologically intense movie musicals.  A female girlie club entertainer in Weimar Republic era Berlin romances two men while the Nazi Party rises to power around them.

7) Moulin Rouge! (2001)

It’s a spectacular show within a show with an amazing medley of song and dance that can’t be rivaled. Christian, an English writer, travels to Paris to join the Bohemian revolution. He visits the city's biggest night club, Moulin Rouge, and falls in love with its star performer and courtesan, Satine.
P.S. Nicole Kidman’s piece of Jewelry is the most expenses ever spent while making a film.

8)  Chicago (2002)

It’s funny, raunchy, and the songs are so catchy. You end up both loving and hating the world of showbiz and everyone in it. Murderesses Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart find themselves on death row together and fight for the fame that will keep them from the gallows.

9) Mamma Mia! (2008)

It’s cheesy and uplifting at the same time, it’s the perfect pick me up film. Meryl Streep plays Donna, who runs a tourist villa on the island, where she has raised her daughter Sophie to the age of 20. Sophie, engaged to Sky, has never known who her father is. But now she's found an old diary and invited the three possible candidates to her forthcoming wedding.

10)  Les Misérables (2012)

Set against the backdrop of 19th-century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption. Jean Valjean(Hugh Jackman), is hunted for decades by the ruthless policeman Javert (Crowe) after he breaks parole. When Valjean agrees to care for factory worker Fantine's (Hathaway) young daughter, Cosette, their lives change forever.
